How It Works

Request A Plant

See something you want? Submit a plant request through the site and we’ll confirm availability with you directly. Because we’re working with living inventory and small quantities, availability can change quickly.

Payment

Once your plant is confirmed, we’ll send you a secure payment link. Your plant is reserved once payment is completed—simple, personal, and intentionally low-tech while Velvet Root grows.

Pickup & Shipping

Local pickup is available by arrangement. Shipping will be available for select plants as we expand, with each plant packed carefully to protect roots, foliage, and all that new growth we’ve been obsessing over.

Botanical Guidance

How do I care for my new plant?

Every plant has slightly different needs, so we prefer species-specific care over one-size-fits-all rules. Your plant’s listing will include its basic light, water, humidity, and care needs, and our care library goes deeper when you want it.

For newly rooted plants, the biggest priority is consistency: appropriate light, careful watering, and a little patience while the plant settles into its new environment.

What is a Rooted Start?

A Rooted Start is a propagated plant that has developed an established root system but is still in the early stages of growth. Depending on the variety, it may arrive with only a handful of leaves and will continue filling out with proper care.

We also offer Established Starts, Young Plants, Mature Plants, and Corms, so you can choose the stage that makes the most sense for you.

Are your plants suitable for beginners?

Absolutely- some of them are. We carry everything from forgiving everyday houseplants to varieties that appreciate a little more attention.

Each listing includes care information so you can choose based on your experience, environment, and willingness to fuss over a plant. No judgment. Some of us enjoy the fuss.

Will I recieve the exact plant pictured?

Unless a listing specifically says otherwise, photos are representative of the variety and stage you can expect. Plants are living things, so leaf count, coloration, variegation, shape, and growth habit will naturally vary.

When an individual specimen is being sold exactly as pictured, we’ll make that clear.

What if I have questions after receiving my plant?

Ask us.

Velvet Root is built by plant people, and we’d rather help troubleshoot a yellow leaf, weird root, or dramatic Alocasia than leave you guessing. Our growing care library covers common questions, and you can always reach out when something looks off.
